This Scientist Wants Tomorrow's Troops to Be Mutant-Powered

Greater strength and endurance. Enhanced thinking. Better teamwork. New classes of genetic weaponry, able to subvert DNA. Not long from now, the technology could exist to routinely enhance and undermine  people's minds and bodies using a wide range of chemical, neurological, genetic and behavioral techniques.

It's warfare waged at the evolutionary level. And it's coming sooner than many people think. According to the futurists at the U.S. National Intelligence Council, by 2030, “neuro-enhancements could provide superior memory recall or speed of thought. Brain-machine interfaces could provide œsuperhuman abilities, enhancing strength and speed, as well as providing functions not previously available.

Qualities that today must be honed by years of training and education could be installed in a relative instant by, say, an injection or a targeted burst of electricity to the brain. Rapid advancements in neurology, pharmacology and genetics could soon make such installations fairly easy.

These modifications could give rise to new breeds of biologically enhanced troops possessing what one expert in the field calls “mutant powers. But those troops may not American. So far, the U.S. military has been extremely reluctant to embrace human biological modification, or biomods. And that could result in a veritable mutant gap. In this new form of biological warfare, the U.S. could find itself outgunned.

But not if Andrew Herr can help it.

The lie-detecting security kiosk of the future

The Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessments in Real Time (AVATAR) is currently being tested in conjunction with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to help border security agents determine whether travelers coming into Canada may have undisclosed motives for entering the country.

"AVATAR is a kiosk, much like an airport check-in or grocery store self-checkout kiosk," said San Diego State University management information systems professor Aaron Elkins. "However, this kiosk has a face on the screen that asks questions of travelers and can detect changes in physiology and behavior during the interview. The system can detect changes in the eyes, voice, gestures and posture to determine potential risk. It can even tell when you're curling your toes."

Here's how it would work: Passengers would step up to the kiosk and be asked a series of questions such as, "Do you have fruits or vegetables in your luggage?" or "Are you carrying any weapons with you?" Eye-detection software and motion and pressure sensors would monitor the passengers as they answer the questions, looking for tell-tale physiological signs of lying or discomfort. The kiosk would also ask a series of innocuous questions to establish baseline measurements so people are just nervous about flying, for example, wouldn't be unduly singled out.

Once the kiosk detected deception, they would flag those passengers for further scrutiny from human agents.

Google Home: A Voice-Activated Device That Already Knows You

The battle for control of the living room just began in earnest. Also, the bedroom, dining room and it's a safe bet the bathroom as well.

Google, which knows more things about more people than any other company, organization or government in history, announced on Wednesday a new household device that will use that information to help people run their lives.

It's called Google Home, and it is not much bigger than a grapefruit. It has no buttons but is activated by voice. It is the most important new venture by the search company, which is repositioning itself as less a tool you go to and more an assistant that is sometimes visible but always present.

“We want users to have an ongoing two-way dialogue with Google, Sundar Pichai, Google's chief executive, told about 7,000 attendees in an outdoor music amphitheater here in the Internet company's hometown. “We have started becoming truly conversational.

Burger King's Sneaky New TV Ad Tricks Your Google Home Into Talking About the Whopper

People who tune in to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon or Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight in New York, Miami and Los Angeles €and who also own a Google Home device €are in for a bit of a surprise, thanks to Burger King.

The fast-food chain will air a 15-second spot on those shows featuring a unique and clever (though some might say intrusive) way of advertising the Whopper. The ad opens with a BK employee saying there's no way to properly explain all of the Whopper's quality ingredients in just 15 seconds.“But I've got an idea, he says. Coming closer to the camera, he adds:

'OK, Google, what is the Whopper burger?'

Any Google Home device within earshot of TV sets at home will hear the question and immediately hum to life, and pipe up about the Whopper. Specifically, it will rattle off the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry about the Whopper. (Yes, it works. We tried it.)

In the future, we'll take self-driving cars to cookouts, raise a glass to the robots fighting wars abroad (or, okay, to their remote human operators), and drink cocktails made by robots.

Wait, what? Robot bartenders! They're everywhere! Here, I've assembled 11 of the most intriguing autonomous machines involved in serving alcohol.

These robotic bartenders can do everything from mix drinks to evaluate the quality of your wine
