Derren Brown œCrowd Experiment: A Response from two Social Psychologists



We would like to dispute in the strongest possible terms the theoretical underpinnings and proposed implications from Derren Brownœcrowd experiment€œ The Gameshow aired on Channel 4 on 28/10/11. Brown second instalment in his series of experiments was designed to show us how being anonymous in a crowd can, in his words, “turn perfectly nice people into internet bullies, or rioters, or hooligans. To demonstrate, audience members were led to believe they were participating in a new interactive game show in which the fate of an unwitting member of the public was placed in their hands. The target was a old man who was out for a drink with some friends.  Along with various actors, the man friends were in on the plan and were in contact with the studio via hidden earpieces.



Throughout the show, the audience were presented with a choice between two scenarios (one positive and one negative) for the man. The severity of the negative outcomes increased throughout the episode, and ranged from being mistakenly charged for an extra round of drinks, to being kidnapped by a œgang of thugs. The audience chose the scenario with a negative outcome each time, and for Brown, this was evidence of the moral depravity that inevitably follows anonymity in crowds.

CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION, MATERIALISM AND SELF
 
Is there a connection between materialism and conspicuous consumption? Materialism has been studied both as a personality trait and a value. Material possessions have also been seen to have both private and public meanings. What is the relationship between materialism and individual characteristics? For example, is there a correspondence between private and public meanings of possessions to private and public selves? What is the effect of societal values such as individualism and collectivism on materialism and conspicuous consumption? A study was conducted to look at the relationships between two existing conceptualizations of materialism and suggest some possible connections between materialism and conspicuous consumption. In addition, the study also tested the moderating effects of individual measures in self-consciousness and individualism-collectivism on materialism.

Psychological egoism is the thesis that we are always deep down motivated by what we perceive to be in our own self-interest.  Psychological altruism, on the other hand, is the view that sometimes we can have ultimately altruistic motives.  Suppose, for example, that Pam saves Jim from a burning office building.  What ultimately motivated her to do this?  It would be odd to suggest that it’s ultimately her own benefit that Pam is seeking.  After all, she’s risking her own life in the process.  But the psychological egoist holds that Pam’s apparently altruistic act is ultimately motivated by the goal to benefit herself, whether she is aware of this or not.  Pam might have wanted to gain a good feeling from being a hero, or to avoid social reprimand that would follow had she not helped Jim, or something along these lines.
 
Several other egoistic views are related to, but distinct from psychological egoism. Unlike ethical egoism, psychological egoism is merely an empirical claim about what kinds of motives we have, not what they ought to be.  So, while the ethical egoist claims that being self-interested in this way is moral, the psychological egoist merely holds that this is how we are. Similarly, psychological egoism is not identical to what is often called “psychological hedonism.”  Psychological hedonism restricts the range of self-interested motivations to only pleasure and the avoidance of pain.  Thus, it is a specific version of psychological egoism.
 
The story of psychological egoism is rather peculiar.  Though it is often discussed, it hasn’t been explicitly held by many major figures in the history of philosophy. It is most often attributed to only Thomas Hobbes (1651) and Jeremy Bentham (1781).  Most philosophers explicitly reject the view, largely based on famous arguments from Joseph Butler (1726).  Nevertheless, psychological egoism can be seen as a background assumption of several other disciplines, such as psychology and economics.  Moreover, some biologists have suggested that the thesis can be supported or rejected directly based on evolutionary theory or work in sociobiology.
 
While psychological egoism is undoubtedly an empirical claim, there hasn’t always been a substantial body of experimental data that bears on the debate. However, a great deal of empirical work beginning in the late 20th century has largely filled the void. Evidence from biology, neuroscience, and psychology has stimulated a lively interdisciplinary dialogue. Regardless of whether or not the empirical evidence renders a decisive verdict on the debate, it has certainly enriched discussion of the issue.

Note: Serge Monast and another journalist, both of whom were researching Project Blue Beam, died of "heart attacks" within weeks of each other although neither had a history of heart disease. Serge was in Canada. The other Canadian journalist was visiting Ireland. Prior to his death, the Canadian government abducted Serge's daughter in an attempt to dissuade him from pursuing his research into Project Blue Beam. His daughter was never returned. Pseudo-heart attacks are one of the alleged methods of death induced by Project Blue Beam.

Also, a new world religion and a new culture for all men. If we really wish to understand the NASA Blue Beam Project, we have to return to the 'dawning of the age of Aquarius.' Remember that song? That song said, 'When the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars, then peace will guide our planet and love will steer the stars.' This related with the year 1982 to be, at that time, the opening for the conspiracy of the age of Aquarius, just before the implementation of the new world order, supposed to begin sometime in 1983.

I have to say that the Blue Beam Project was set up for the year 1983. It has been delayed; we don't know exactly why. But, since 1983 (eighteen years before the publication of this report), they have really improved themselves with new technology and innovations in space hardware and software in which they are involved right now to make their systems possible. So, the goals of the new age movement under which the United Nations operates right now, are the implementation of a new world 'messiah.' The tools of the new world order are,

1. an international army;
2. an international police force;
3. a world bank for the economy;
4. a world government under the United Nations;
5. a world conservatory bank for wilderness preservation around the world. That means all 'green' movements will be melded into the new international bank or disappear altogether;
6. a world religion where all church doctrines will be destroyed at the roots to be replaced by the new world religion of the age of Aquarius;
7. the world seven-races classification for all human slaves who will fulfill predetermined work tasks whether they agree with it or not;
8. the world concentration headquarters at the United Nations for those who will not accept the new system;
9. the world agriculture and food supply control which will control food and vitamin supplies around the world.Â

I think setting up photos where they are completely staged is very widespread. Ive seen it done by very-well-known photographers, mostly in conflict or disaster situations. Ive witnessed photographers try to recreate moments when they arrived to a scene too late.

The public has lost trust in the media. We have to be ambassadors of the truth, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard because the public no longer trusts the media. We are considered merchants of misery and therefore get a bad rap.

It seems that the honor system is not working. Editors need to be a little tougher and demand those raw files to see the timelines and those mistakes when there is a suspicion that something is not correct.

I guess when Trump dared the Russians to release the emails they finally did it. Too bad his Lucy lewd escapade scene in the media takes precedent over something more important. Assange warned ahead of his released material. I guess the Hillary Machine dropped their trump card into the mix.
