Why is history getting to be such a taboo subject? |

Now, academic history ââ¬â the stuff argued over in portentously-titled tomes from micro-presses ââ¬â may well turn on one or two facts unearthed from dusty archives.  And things ââ¬Åeverybody knowsââ¬Â in the biz** are routinely challenged and disproven (thatââ¬â¢s one of the ways you get tenure).  But thatââ¬â¢s not particularly useful for our purposes.
Â
Iââ¬â¢ll give you an example.  Iââ¬â¢ve been arguing in these pages that the 2016 campaign has been a weird mishmash of the 1852 and 1856 presidential elections, with Donald Trump in the John C. Fremont role.  I claim national defense (= borders + Muzzies) now is equivalent to slavery back then ââ¬â the only thing ordinary people wanted to talk about, and the one thing both political parties wouldnââ¬â¢t talk about under torture.  I say Trump is Fremont because both Trump and Fremont, are, quite frankly, lunatics ââ¬â but theyââ¬â¢re straight-talking lunatics who wonââ¬â¢t shut up about the one issue the public actually wants to hear, and who promise action.

Marcus Du Sautoy wants to find out how close we are to creating machines that can think like us: robots or computers that have artificial intelligence.
His journey takes him to a strange and bizarre world where AI is now taking shape.
Marcus meets two robots who are developing their own private language, and attempts to communicate to them. He discovers how a supercomputer beat humans at one of the toughest quiz shows on the planet, Jeopardy. And finds out if machines can have creativity and intuition like us.
Marcus is worried that if machines can think like us, then he will be out of business. But his conclusion is that AI machines may surprise us with their own distinct way of thinking.
