How about just the history of ideas that have permeated our country for some time. Tools taught were logic with little experiment. The sources of truth came from authority, not nature. Discourse alone concentrated on victory in arguments. A stoic sense. But, nothing too practical or vocational in nature. The reasoning started divided itself into psychological faculties.

The awakeners and enlightened reasoners are the two souls battling within the great American consciousness.

It's important to keep in mind of things that could happen.
 
Types of surveillance
 
Physical surveillance - spies and intruders. Historically the only form of surveillance humanity knew. Things change over time. Communication methods change along with the means of interception.
 
Signals interception - Electronic means of gathering information. 
 
Dataveillance - collection and analysis of personal information about individuals.

The foundation of dataveillance was first used by the NAZIs. A punch card system was developed by a company known as Dehomag. A subsidiary of IBM. This kept tabs on all individuals and cataloged them accordingly.
 
STASI like behavioral methods require many informers and collaborators. Using fear and active retribution to maintain its grip on all thoughts and behavioral attitudes. 
 
Extreme examples of surveillance: STASI and NAZI methods of control. Paying closer attention to everyone around you. Illiciting conflicting behaviors in the population. Paranoid in nature with an intent on destroying common trust, repect, and decency in the community.
 
They kept tabs on telephone conversations, opened the mails, checked the trash for illegal goods, even typewriters were kept track of. All the typeset was 'fingerprinted' in their file networks.
 
Technology has always played an important part. Collecting, maintaining, and accessing information about individuals has become easier than ever. With the all seeing eyes and hearing ears of godlike tech keeping tabs on everyone in every way imaginable it makes it easier to do social experiments on a grand and epic scale.

Both sides of that seem to have a lust for power that over rides freedom. Using divine authority to justify their intentions. Technology has given the agencies of men the power to oversee and hear eveything, store it in databanks, analyze a given profile, and judge accordingly. 

 

It isn't just the American consciousness that displays these behaviors. All nations do. History has always been a constant battle for power. One side or another extending their reach beyond moderate means. The hubris and greed of the rulers over reaching all sensibility causing all who serve under them great suffering. 

 

Somehow it all seems to have gone beyond any government or power. There are greater principalities behind the scenes directing the powers for their own global agenda.
