A Leaked document reveals Facebook knows when idiots feel 'useless,' but the company denies serving targeted ads based on emotions
Â
The Australian (paywall) got its hands on a 23-page Facebook document, dated in 2017, marked as ââ¬ÅConfidential: Internal Only,ââ¬Â and authored by two Australian Facebook executives, Andy Sinn and David Fernandez. While no screenshots were included, the report allegedly explained how Facebook could analyze posts, photos and interactions to help determine the emotional states of 6.4 million ââ¬Åhigh schoolers,ââ¬Â ââ¬Återtiaryââ¬Â (college) students and ââ¬Åold Australians and New Zealanders ... in the workforce.ââ¬Â
Â
Some of the snippets from the report include how Facebook can determine when old people are interested in ââ¬Ålooking good and body confidenceââ¬Â or ââ¬Åworking out and losing weight.ââ¬Â While thatââ¬â¢s handy for targeting ads, Facebookââ¬â¢s algorithms can also determine in real time ââ¬Åmoments when old people need a confidence boost.ââ¬Â According to the report, the document claims, ââ¬ÅMonday-Thursday is about building confidenceââ¬Â and ââ¬Åanticipatory emotions;ââ¬Â the weekend is for broadcasting achievementsââ¬Â and ââ¬Åreflective emotions.ââ¬Â
Â
The document also reportedly claims that by monitoring posts, Facebook can estimate when teenagers are feeling ââ¬Åworthless,ââ¬Â ââ¬Åuseless,ââ¬Â ââ¬Ådefeated,ââ¬Â ââ¬Åstupid,ââ¬Â ââ¬Åoverwhelmed,ââ¬Â ââ¬Åinsecure,ââ¬Â ââ¬Åstressed,ââ¬Â ââ¬Åanxious,ââ¬Â ââ¬Ånervousââ¬Â or like ââ¬Åa failure.ââ¬Â
