Why Is There a Full-Scale Replica of the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee?

Nashville, Tennessee's full-scale replica of the Parthenon, while seemingly random, isn't gimmicky. Instead, the structure, created in 1897, provides an awe-inspiring look at the iconic Athens structure badly damaged hundreds of years ago. Created with an incredible attention to historical accuracy €and boasting a 42-foot-tall gold-coated sculpture of Athena Nashville's Parthenon is simply awesome.

This American Parthenon was originally intended to be temporary. Built at the tail-end of the 19th century for the Centennial Exposition in Tennessee, the recreated Parthenon served as the festival's art gallery and spoke to the city's self-declared reputation as the “Athens of the South. (Not to be outdone, Memphis built a Pyramid as a reminder that the city was named after Memphis, Egypt.)

But compared to the contemporary ruins in Greece, the Nashville Parthenon boasts a major historical detail: polychromy. Along with parts of the exterior and interior of the building proper, the massive gold Athena statue is painted in bright colors. It's jarring, and even a bit goofy-looking by today's standards, given that we're used to the erroneous idea that ancient times were dominated by a simple, unadorned white marble aesthetic. In actuality, the ancient Greeks painted all of their statues: Seeing them emblazoned in green, red, blue, and other colors is more historically accurate. It also rights the long-held and historically incorrect view of the ancient past as one dominated by whiteness.

And like the original, the Nashville Parthenon has become something of a tourist trap, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. So while it feels odd to write this, it's true: You haven't really seen the Parthenon until you've been to Nashville, Tennessee.

Esoteric Architecture of Washington, D.C.

Long before Dan Brown's enigmatic bestseller The Lost Symbol popularized the idea that Masonic emblems reveal a conspiracy involving the history and design of Washington, D.C., generations of writers have speculated on the subject. Various Christian authors have developed an extensive mythology around the idea that a satanic pentagram marks the original D.C. city plan. Meanwhile some Masonic authors celebrate possible influence and ubiquitous symbols without regard for objectivity.

In his influential, but also much maligned, The Secret Destiny of America, when Manly Hall wrote that America could become a new more enlightened Atlantis, he mentioned the “democracy of ten kings and praised the idea of one world government in a world of free trade. Taken out of context, in today's zeitgeist, he seems to be advocating an elitist neocon agenda. But in fact, writing in 1944 with the world at war, he was trying to inspire Americans to a vision of a better way of life, a world of cooperation. Hall was always free with metaphors. Without connection to universities, in the days before the Internet, he depended on a limited pool of often-questionable scholarship. His book should be taken as a stirring blend of fact and myth visionary history, not accurate scholarship.

In the horoscope for April 21, 1791, the day the foundation stone for Washington D.C. was laid Jupiter was rising at 23 degrees Virgo. October 13, 1792, the day the stone for the White House was laid, the moon conjunct North node was at 23 degrees Virgo. Ovason writes: “On September 18th, 1793, when President George Washington in his role as Grand Master laid the foundation stone for the Capitol the Sun was in 24 degrees of Virgo, and thus reflected the Virgoan nature of the new city. When the cornerstone for the Washington Monument was laid July 4th, 1848, the moon went into Virgo; more importantly, the north node was at 25 Virgo.

Why this degree of Virgo? “According to medieval Arab astrologers, Ovason explains, “this degree had a particular importance: it marked that point in the zodiac where the Moon was thought to promote the greatest happiness and well-being. We must presume, then, that the intention behind the choice of moment was that this beneficial influence would be transmitted into Washington, D.C. Ovason writes that on August 10, 1791 the three fixed stars Arcturus, Regulus and Spica rose at sunset, forming a celestial triangle that inspired the design of the city’s Federal Triangle.

Spica, from the Latin spca virginis, Virgo's ear of grain, has a history in Hermetic circles. In his Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Cornelius Agrippa connected Spica with Hermes Trismegistus. He also described a talisman with the image of a bird and a man carrying goods, which, according to Agrippa, conferreth riches, and maketh one overcome contentions, it taketh away scarcity and mischief.

Among the elder occultists I had the pleasure of meeting thanks to Manly Hall, and among the spiritualists I met on my explorations of forbidden territory, I often heard the phrase “capping the pyramid as a short hand description of some mysterious fate for the United States, America's esoteric destiny. The dollar bill has the most familiar symbol of the uncapped pyramid, although it is capped by the all seeing eye. The Scottish Rite House of the Temple in D.C., with its thirteen-step unfinished pyramid on top, is the most monumental.

I was told that many ancient Egyptians were reincarnating as Americans to achieve the culmination of a plan that began in the days of the pharaohs. In his writing on America's secret destiny, Manly Hall presented an idealized interpretation of the Pharaoh Akhenaton as “the first democrat. While most scholars would disagree with Hall's rosy portrait of the pharaoh, there's no denying his observation that here was the first great ruler in history to insist on being depicted with his arms around his wife and children.

Aten_disk But what possible connection could Akhenaton have with America? Like an overtone of music or an unexpected word in a poem, some tantalizing almost-fact always seems to pop-up when the researcher is ready to refuse the idea once and for all as obviously ridiculous. For example, Akhenaton's temple to his queen Nefertiti was oriented to the setting of the star Spica. Washington D.C. is oriented to Spica. This tantalizing fragment of a fingerprint that might be nothing but a coincidence is the stuff of which conspiracy theories are made.

Veteran provocateur Robert Hieronimus, in his popular book on the Great Seal of the United States, suggested that capping the pyramid means crowning the multitudinous forms of matter with the all-seeing eye of the divine eternal monad thereby uniting the opposites to create an enlightened citizenry and society. He ascribed such talismanic power to The Great Seal of the United States that he wrote if given appropriate attention, like an ultimate alchemical emblem of the Great Secret, it would inspire an evolved citizenry and society. For Hieronimus, when the Freemason FDR lifted the Great Seal from the obscurity of government use to the ubiquitous dollar bill, America was given the opportunity to evolve into a spiritual nation.

Trump's Revisiting National Monument

U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, traveled to Maine last summer to hear from opponents of the Katahdin Woods and Water National Monument at the request of Maine's 2nd District U.S. Congressman Bruce Poliquin, also a Republican. Bishop visited East Millinocket, a meeting that was also attended by LePage.

Bishop praised Trump's executive order in a statement released Wednesday.

"Today's action sends the powerful message that communities will no longer take a back seat to out-of-state special interest groups," Bishop said. "I'm pleased to see President Trump recognize long-standing abuses of the Antiquities Act. It was created with noble intent and for limited purposes, but has been hijacked to set aside increasingly large and restricted areas of land without public input."

The Antiquities Act, passed into law in 1906, authorizes the president to declare federal lands as monuments and restrict how the lands can be used.

Zinke, the interior secretary, told the Associated Press that the order, which Trump will sign during a visit to his department, will cover several dozen monuments across the country designated since 1996 that total 100,000 acres or more, from the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah to the Bears Ears in southeastern Utah.

Over the last 20 years, Zinke said, tens of millions of acres have been designated as national monuments, limiting their use for farming, timber harvesting, mining and oil and gas exploration, and other commercial uses.

Presidential Executive Order on the Review of Designations Under the Antiquities Act

Trump's Plan to Dismantle National Monuments Comes With Steep Cultural and Ecological Costs

Trump's order suggests that larger-scale monuments such as Bears Ears National Monument in Utah, or the Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana, run afoul of the Antiquities Act because of their size. Nothing is farther from the truth. The act gives presidents discretion to protect landmarks and "objects of historic or scientific interest" located within federal lands. Designations are not limited to a particular acreage, but rather to "the smallest area compatible with proper care and management of the objects to be protected."

Thus, the size and geographic range of the protected resources dictate the scale of the designation. We would not be properly managing the Grand Canyon by preserving a foot-wide cross-section of its topography in a museum.

The US Supreme Court upheld the validity of larger-scale monuments when it affirmed President Teddy Roosevelt's 1908 designation of the Grand Canyon as "the greatest eroded canyon in the United States" in Cameron v. US in 1920. Cameron, an Arizona prospector-politician, had filed thousands of baseless mining claims within the canyon and on its rim, including the scenic Bright Angel Trail, where he erected a gate and exacted an entrance fee. He challenged Roosevelt's sweeping designation and lost, spectacularly, because the Grand Canyon's grandeur's grandeur was precisely what made it worthy of protection.

By downsizing or dismantling a monument, Trump would be intentionally unprotecting the larger-scale resources our nation has been managing as national treasures. The loss in value would be considerable, and compounded doubly by the lost cultural and ecological progress we have made under related laws.

Does this article imply that the Confederates were just as bad as the NAZIs?

Rewriting history or attending to the past? Monuments still confound Europe, too.

Germans have a word for coming to terms with the past, “Vergangenheitsbewtigung. The word, coined after World War II, has no equivalent in the English language, no analog that might inform the anguished American debate over Confederate monuments

On a continent riven in the last century by two world wars, genocide and a battle of ideas waged across the Iron Curtain, European nations have accepted the burden of curating the tortured landscapes of their past. Symbols insignia, flags, monuments have become explosive at moments of regime change, as shifts in political power alter the cultural currents of the day. East-west friction particularly marks the conflict over remembrance in Europe, from de-Nazification in the Cold War era to contests today over commemoration of communism's past.

The European Union in 2005 dropped proposals to ban both Nazi and communist symbols, due to concerns for freedom of expression as well as disagreement over the scope of the prohibition. Still, many European nations bar the use of totalitarian symbolism. In parts of Eastern Europe, bans expressly extend to communist iconography. In Germany, only the prohibition on Nazi symbols and signals is unambiguous; tourists from across the globe have recently learned that giving the Nazi salute is forbidden.

Many sites associated with the Nazis stand today as haunting museums. Other structures have been demolished to thwart neo-Nazi pilgrimages. A prison that housed Nazi war criminals was razed in 1987, its materials ground to powder and scattered in the North Sea.

But purging Germany of Nazism was not as swift as severe legal codes might suggest. Nor were the country's motives as pure, said Jacob S. Eder, a scholar of German history and Holocaust memory at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena.

Yeah. What the hell, put them in the same group. It'll be like a prison for statues so others can visit and see the living ideas presented in their full glory. Ideologies of the past all gathered together showing their true face(s) for all to see. Which ideologies belong in this hypothetical prison? Can it reform? What happens when one or more of them escape? Large ideologies are really hard to contain...

creations of ethos, dignatas, gravitas, whatever...
all there to perpetuate a spirit from the past.
all meant to generate pathos; triggered on command!

the whole nation is a living monument.
the forefathers created it for the purpose of sharing sovereign freedom.
too bad foreign influences are chipping away at the spiritual structure.
