Locked away in an apartment in the Lower East Side of Manhattan for fourteen years, the Angulo family's seven childrenââ¬âsix brothers named Mukunda, Narayana, Govinda, Bhagavan, Krisna (Glenn), and Jagadesh (Eddie), and their sister Visnuââ¬âlearned about the world through watching films. They also re-enact scenes from their favorite movies.

The film's director Crystal Moselle certainly chose a good subject, but too much of what Moselle shows us looks tenderized.Â

Only the familyââ¬â¢s basic history is easily explained. The mother, Susanne, a footloose Midwesterner, met Oscar Angulo, a Peruvian would-be musician and guide, hiking a trail to Machu Picchu. They moved around in the United States after they married and wound up in New York, where Oscar, ostensibly fearing for his childrenââ¬â¢s safety, kept them inside almost full time. Susanne home-schooled them, and the family collected welfare.
