Why some scams are designed to be easy to spot

#1
Some scams are so obvious you might wonder why the criminals don’t try harder:

but that’s a deliberate technique

The scams involved here are the notorious Nigerian 419 scams, where a criminal sends out batch emails claiming to be a Nigerian prince trying to recover a fortune.

The surprising twist

The fact that these scams are so well-known, and yet still continue, prompted a researcher at Microsoft called Cormac Herley to write: 'Why do Nigerian Scammers Say They are from Nigeria?' He posed the question that given that the entire email is a lie, why wouldn't the scammers lie about their location? His answer was surprising.....

Scammers aren't non-English speakers with computers. They're savvy manipulators who play off your emotions. That's why even the stupidest scams will work on the right vulnerable person. "I'm pretty good at recognizing scams. But I still have the same physiological response as everyone else when I see a too-good-to-be-true opportunity," says Robert Siciliano, a McAfee online security expert. "You don't have to be a moron to get sucked into that feeling." These online scams have been around forever—some, even before the Internet—yet thousands of people are still falling for them every day. Here's what you need to know so you're never conned again.

How about some of the more complex worldwide scams? Religion for one. Politics as another. What is fit to criticize? Obey or be cuffed, buffed, and stuffed!
