Gargoyles are essentially elaborate, stylized rain gutters. Their mouths provide a spout that lets water drain from the roofs of churches and temples where they typically reside -- which begs the question of why a place of worship would want such eerie statues to adorn its walls.

In addition to their functional purpose, gargoyles in Medieval times were thought to ward off evil and to serve as a frightening visual incentive for people to obey church teaching. Over time they became more ornamental but largely continued the 'grotesque' aesthetic most associate with gargoyles.

Look around your own town. Look up, look down, look all around, never know what kind of gargoyle is watching!

However we interpret the meaning of the gargoyles and grotesques which inhabit the churches and buildings of the western world, it is quite clear that their significance to the medieval population went well beyond the purely decorative or functional. They were, in effect, the representations in stone of a collective unconscious that transcended generational and national boundaries. Even in the darkest recess at the loftiest height, one can still find oneself face to face with the secret suspicion or innermost fear of medieval men and women. Perhaps because they shared these half-remembered beliefs, the Church elders tolerated this surreal stone terrarium and thus helped preserve its rich, strange heritage to a remarkable degree

Very little has been produced on the history or symbolism of these works of art. Books about Gothic and Romanesque church architecture, especially that of FranceNotre-Dame Cathedral, have the greatest amount of detail concerning gargoyle and grotesque carvings but as historic accounts they are superficial at best. As Bill Yenne wrote, there is no accepted explanation of why they exist as they do. (1) The Gothic Revival period produced the largest and most varied number of gargoyles and grotesquesas well as the most beautifully carved however, the origin of the gargoyle dates much earlier. According to Bridaham, “A gargoyle dug up at Alesia dating from 160 AD, shows a plain channel with a human head as spout.

The Unexpected Influence of Stories Told at Work

Telling and listening to stories are traditional, even ancient, means of passing on wisdom and culture. As the research I’ve discussed suggests, stories can help organizations more effectively communicate both simple and complex knowledge about values, norms, and the solutions to difficult problems. In most organizations, there are plenty of untapped stories that could be told that would change behavior for the better.

“The pagan intellectuals reclothed their original ideas in a garment of christian phraseology but bestowed the keys of the symbolism only upon those duly initiated and bound to secrecy

I'm thinking that all these architectual great works of mystery started in Ancient Egypt. It's been morphing it's form for millenia.  Still the same type of framework today to shock and awe the uninitiated and uneducated to believe in an artifical structure of human control. It keeps us all down to our baser levels of existence. Leaving us nothing but dry husks at the end! A second death, so to speak...
