If you've been asking yourself "who's behind this push for the link tax?" look no further than giant publishing houses and their lobbyists hoping to become like the next generation of record labels. But how are they framing their bid for more copyright control? Read on to find out.

The EU ‘attack on the hyperlink’. What’s it all about?

The idea is about ancillary copyright. What that means is that a link you make to material that may be under copyright, like an article on CluckZ, is, itself, subject to copyright.

Under ancillary copyright, a person who links to this CluckZ article could be pursued for violating CluckZ’s copyright.

According to the leaked draft, copyright holders are concerned about their content being monetised by others, without licensing, through content aggregation. This is where a rights holder or creator releases their own content online, which is then aggregated by a third party, re-packaged and re-sold.

Under the existing interpretation of the right of communication to the public, if a work has been made available online, linking to it does not expose it to new audiences, so the right remains intact and linking is not an infringement. But the commission proposes to overhaul these rules in order to harmonise them across the EU now that some member states have tried to solve this issue on their own.

Hyperlink At Your Own Risk

Hyperlinks are inserted into a Web site by the site's owner, who can create the link without the assistance of the owner of the linked-to site. Under standard "netiquette," such links are added without the permission of the linked site. Such is the case, in part, because the link benefits the linked site by bringing it additional viewers.

Recently, however, a series of lawsuits have drawn into doubt the continued viability of this practice. These suits are driven by a number of concerns, principal among them is the advertising potential of the Web. Advertisers are willing to post ads based on the traffic and number of viewers attracted to a site.

EU Commission continues slow march towards innovation-killing link tax

Now that the EU Commission has opened a new consultation on ancillary copyright, they're looking to justify the need for the link tax. Read Ruth's take on Günther H. Oettinger's speech in Brussels this evening.

All those links from the above cut and paste would now be subject to tax.

Sheeit! Record producers. Now why doesn't that surprise me. IDK, maybe cuz its the greed and glitz and all that gloating consumption. Along with old Hollywood casting a visual spell of illusion to trick the minds of the people into paying a taxes for every little quantifiable thing. Sucking the little dude dry with a swarm of mosquitoes....Sound, light, and action!

Record producers. They helped create the Planet Parchment Project. Along with with the Hollywood Hammers they hold sway over all media driven fantasy. They're sending out their taxation methods outward to dull the senses with purple dazzle to keep us all un-wary of such taxing things.

That's an interesting phrase from the article. Makes one wonder what kind of software is used to gather such detailed and interesting data and how it's used to drive behavioral agendas forward.

Ultimately, this could put forums and blogs of all genres out of business. Something like a tightening of access related products into bundles of taxable permissions. Only the larger brand names would survive this culling. Netting the tuna fish while leaving safety measures for the sharks to escape.

WTF?

What is this planet parchment project?

Prince was well known in keeping his own interests protected with copyright laws. Search youtube and try to find any of his CDs. He kept a tight leash on his own work.

Quote:Good story OP. This is something for all web developers and self-employed marketers out there. This affects the little guy in so many ways.

This internet tax makes it easier for the larger media driven corporations to clamp down and re define copyright law. It not only serves to maximize their profits but to actually quantify as many restrictions as possible. Making it easier to affect behaviors in consumer profile habits. It would then be possible to construct a 'class system' type platform of access to all customers. Charge more for certain types of information, less for the more generic kind.

Access to the 'deep cloud', to the sheep cloud, to whatever kind of cloud can thought of. Clouds within clouds. Each access driven with it's own hierarchy of 'class driven' restrictions. Fully vetted to better serve the customer.

Access granted - Access denied

How would this work? Would you have to buy the Google Hyperlink Package for website genres? A wide range of cloud like categories with bundled deals going up the ladder from scab to supreme access?

Taxing the Hyperlinking spammer

Hyperlink Taxation without Representation - Guest - 05-25-2022

Taxing hyperlinks? That's like popping a quarter into a video game. What about for people who click on a hyperlink?

Will there ever be a charge for every click you take?
